The Saarinen Tulip Table has become one of the most famous pieces in the Saarinen furniture collection. Created in 1957, this beautiful Saarinen table embodies the thought and theory behind one of the 20th century\'s great architects. The Saarinen Tulip Table shown here is a favorite as it can be used in a variety of spaces, but is most commonly used as a dining table. Constructed of cast aluminum, the Saarinen table flows from top to bottom and from side to side in a fluid exchange of lines.
Eero Saarinen is widely regarded as one of the most influential architects and industrial designers of the 20 century. Landmark architectural designs, such as the TWA terminal at JFK Airport and the Dulles International Airport terminal, remain in use. Meanwhile, designs like the Tulip Table and Womb Chair are still in production and widely used around the world.
This Saarinen Tulip Table has a lacquered cast aluminum base in white or black and stands 28 1/4\" in height. The Saarinen table base is treated with a clear protective finish to resist scratches, stains, and scuffs. Saarinen table stone tops are protected with a natural wax finish or finished with a protective polyester sheet.
Eero Saarinen was brought up in a home of artistic creativity as his father, Eliel, was a famous industrial designer and urban planner in his own right. Eero received much of his formal education at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and at Yale University. At these prestigious universities, Eero Saarinen developed his own distinctive style, diverging from the functional modernist styles of Breuer, van der Rohe, and Gropius. This second generation of modernism would be further developed alongside such designers as Charles Eames and Florence Knoll.
Perhaps the landmark moment for Saarinen’s designs came in 1940-1941 during the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition. At this competition, Saarinen received prizes for two categories: seating and other living room furnishings.
